Just because we don’t know about the history of violence doesn’t make these sanctuaries a safe place. Unfortunately, there are monsters in the neighborhood as well. I like what I read of them, and I'm all for getting to know more alpha heroes.
Overall, this was just an ok edition to The Raines of Wind Canyon (or the "Against" series). I own every book Brenda Joyce has published, and I am a huge fan. Better still, read the Gospel of John as it is written, rather than through the filter of a fictionalized, modernized, and thoroughly unbelievable Pilate.. She leaves the house, she does things and keeps things from Trace because "there's no way" this person could be involved or "she has to work" so she takes off to the beach alone, let's her cell phone die, and makes herself vulnerable.
One very small side story that I would have loved to have gotten more page time was between Maggie's sister Ashley, her baby boy and Jason, the son of Trace's murdered clie
