This book has two functions. The first is to provide a comprehensive and concise outline of the available human factors knowledge for the practicing pilot. The second function is to provide this knowledge in a way that follows very closely the syllabus of the UK Civil Aviation Authority’s (CAA) Human Performance and Limitations examinations for both professional and private pilots. Although the private pilot’s syllabus requires a narrower range of subjects to be studied, and in less detail, than the professional syllabus, this handbook covers both requirements, with syllabus variations being indicated in the contents page. She goes much deeper into her personal feelings,but at he same time she is scholarly in a way that is easy to understand and use as a guideline. It is not the complete story of the Apollo moon missions; there are lots of history and technology books for that. Human factors encompasses a wide range of knowledge, skills and attitudes including communications, situational awareness, problem solving, decision making, and teamwork.
Human factors is concerned with the cognitive and interpersonal skills required to manage the flight within an organised aviation system. It is not the detailed personal story of what it was like to go to the moon; there are many individual autobiographies for that. I have enjoyed Carolyn Ellis' work for some years. These are stories that will be passed along forever, as they should be, and never forgotten..
