She wrote of her first sight of the Japanese people and the land that would be her home for the following months. There are some nice pictures. Reading this book is like listening to soothing music. Though well written stylistically, it's horribly researched. Here, Pilate is depicted as being a compassionate and benevolent governor, rather than the cruel and rigid man history knows him to have been. The author's style is reminiscent of Bill Bryson's, turning seemingly mundane topics and activities into hilarious tragicomic misadventures. If all one did was to skim the book reading its captions, and nothing else, one would arguably still learn a great deal of the subject. Both insightful and captivating. Shortly thereafter, my 2nd grader's teacher sent a note to all of the parents in her class essentially asking us all to stop trying to "re-teach" or correct the way that our kids were doing 2 digit addition because it was creating confusion.
