Yolen's confident hand with verbal rhythms has never been more evident. The author moves naturally from rhyming couplets to internal rhymes, letting the changing beats of the lines evoke "A ton of unpredictable moose on the loose" or "Lynx, now quick, now slow, now silent as snow." The unforced musical language is a pleasure to read aloud. Regan's double-page paintings use an icy palette of blues and whites to create a sense of chilly beauty and mystery. As the seasons change, the artist allows color to creep in gradually until summer on the tundra bursts forth in a riot of yellow poppies and blue lupines. As the warmth fades, the colors freeze up again, lit by the northern lights. As an elementary educator myself, parents are constantly asking about the new math standards, asking what they are all about and how they can best help their children master them. It is similar to Wimpy Kid but a little more involved.. Splitting a sentence between four pages is not our idea of reading. Here, Pilate is depicted as being a compassionate and benevolent governor, rather than the cruel and rigid man history knows him to have been. Joy of Bears is a small book, but the images it contains are powerful. Wonderful pictures. Too late or too early results in failure. This book is easy to read and no complicated language, one can speed read this nicely.
