As a tiny narrow-gauge railroad with a mere 40 miles of track, Mann's Creek gained a considerable reputation in the 1950s for its adherence to steam power. With a connection to the Chesapeake & Ohio's mainline deep in the west Virginia mountains, Mann's Creek operated from 1873 to 1956, and carried large amounts of coal and timber for shipment over the C&O. It sets a very high standard for railroad publishing. The authors take us on a delightful trip over the entire railroad, with text and map references that are well coordinated. Particularly useful to modelers are the photos, which include unusual pictures like much of the inside of a coal hopper. Good interpersonal skills encourage the creation of synergy and the development of successful teamwork. The comments at times elicit a smile or a laugh or raised eyebrow. The book includes a profusion of scale plans: two enginehouses, the Clifftop company store, the line's funky caboose, coal hoppers, a trestle, a truck-to-rail coal tipple, and other structures. They are all
